Connecting to the Internet

Modem - A modem is a devices or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines. Computer information is stored digitally, whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analog waves. A modem converts between these two forms.

BroadbandThe term broadband is used to describe a type of data transmission in which a single medium (wire) can carry several channels at once.

Cable ModemA modem designed to operate over cable TV lines. Because the coaxial cable used by cable TV provides much greater band width than telephone lines, a cable modem can be used to achieve extremely fast access to the World Wide Web.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Satellite broadband offers two-way Internet access via satellites. Your computer, through a special satellite modem, broadcasts requests to a satellite dish that sits on top of your home or business.
